See full gallery on TechnoBuffaloThe first Lumia smartphone to sport a Microsoft logo wasn’t exactly the cutting-edge flagship we were hoping for, but you can be sure Microsoft has exciting devices up its sleeve for the future. The prototype handset pictured above with a giant rear-facing camera could well be one of them.
It’s codenamed the Nokia “RM-1052,” and it made its first appearance on Chinese auction site Taobao. Specifications include a 5-inch 1080p display and 2GB of RAM, but the handset’s processor and other internals remain a mystery. The device is powered by Windows Phone 8.1, and it has a notice on its back that reads, “prototype property of Microsoft Mobile.”
The camera is, of course, the handset’s most obvious highlight, and it’s thought it could be better than or equal to the Lumia 1020′s 41-megapixel sensor. It clearly has an LED flash rather than the 1020′s Xenon one, though, and it appears to be lacking a mechanical shutter.
Because this is a Microsoft device — albeit carrying the Nokia name — we know it’s a fairly recent model. What’s unclear at this point, however, is whether this is merely a prototype made for testing purposes that will never enter the market, a premature version of the Lumia 1020 that didn’t make the final cut, or an early look at a future Microsoft smartphone.
The device appears to made almost entirely out of aluminum, with a small plastic strip along its bottom edge. The Verge suggests this could be the rumored “Nokia McLaren,” a device that was expected to succeed the Lumia 1020 and deliver innovative, Kinect-style gesture controls — but ended up being canceled earlier this year.
For now, we’ll just have to wait and see whether the RM-1052 ever shows its face in an official capacity.
